The short version. Your wheels stay on your phone. A shared wheel travels inside its link. A group room sits on our server for a week and then deletes itself. Nobody, including us, can see who crossed out what. There are no accounts, no ads, and nothing that follows you around the internet.
What stays on your device
The wheels you make, which options you've benched, the last few things the wheel picked, and whether the sound is on. All of it lives in your browser's storage or in the app on your phone. It never leaves unless you share a wheel, and even then it goes to whoever you send it to, not to us.
Shared wheels
When you share a wheel, the whole wheel is packed into the link itself, in the part after the #. Browsers don't send that part to servers, so a shared wheel never touches ours. The person you send it to gets the wheel from the link alone.
Rooms
A room is the one thing that does use a server, because everyone in the group needs to vote from their own phone. A room holds:
- the wheel: its name, its icon, and the options on it
- the first name each person typed when they joined
- each person's votes, which are the options they crossed out
- a scrambled stamp of the connection that opened the room, so one person can't open thousands of them. It's a one-way hash with a secret mixed in, and it can't be turned back into an address.
Votes are secret and stay secret. The server only ever tells anyone how many people have voted and, once it's settled, which options survived and which one won. It never says who crossed out what, not even after the spin.
Rooms delete themselves after 7 days. Everything above goes with them.
When you paste a room link into a chat, the chat app fetches a preview of the page. That preview carries the wheel's name and how many have voted so far. It never carries anyone's name.
What we count
We count page views using Vercel Web Analytics. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't build a profile of you, and doesn't follow you to other sites. It tells us roughly how many people used the wheel today, not who.
To see how rooms are doing, we look at totals in our own database: how many were opened, how many settled. Counts only. We don't read wheel names, people's names, or votes to do it.
The iPhone app
The app is the same wheel with a few things a website can't do. It buzzes when the wheel ticks, it can spin when you shake the phone, and it may ask you to rate it. The motion it reads for shaking stays on the phone. The rating request goes through Apple, on Apple's terms.
Where things go when you tap a link
After the wheel lands, it can hand you on to Google Maps, JustWatch, or a search. Nothing is sent to any of them until you tap. Once you do, you're on their site under their rules.
Who runs the pieces
- Vercel hosts the site and the small server functions, and runs the analytics above.
- Neon stores rooms in a database. Only rooms. Nothing else ever goes there.
- Apple distributes the iPhone app.
- Discord, if you use the bot there, sends us the command you typed so we can open a room from it. We keep nothing from Discord beyond the room itself.
What we never do
- No accounts. There's nothing to sign up for.
- No ads, and no ad networks watching what you spin.
- No selling, renting, or sharing anything about you with anyone.
- No profiles, no cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting.
Children
Wheel See is for anyone, but it's not aimed at children and we don't knowingly collect anything from anyone under 13. There's very little to collect from anyone.
Changes
If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. We won't quietly start doing something this page says we don't.
Questions
Wheel See is made by one person. Write to hello@wheelsee.app and you'll get that person.
